The Global Gospel
In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world – just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God's grace. –Colossians 1:6
The Lord says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.—Isaiah 49:6
Dr. Paul Borthwick, senior consultant to Development Associates International, challenged his audience's vision of God when he addressed Chapel Wednesday morning. We are to take the light of Christ to the nations, he said, that all might learn to fear God. "Our vision of God is too small," he stated. "We tend to make God into our own cultural image." Dr. Borthwick invited everyone to seek what God's heart is for the world. "[God] is not saying we shouldn't be concerned about America," Dr. Borthwick continued, "but not just America."
Dr. Borthwick continued to probe pre-conceived ideas. "Is your vision of God too small?" he asked. "God is not limited by our lack of belief." He spoke of many people of other religions in other countries who are seeing visions of angels, and of Jesus, and believing in Jesus as a result. "Do you find this hard to believe?" he questioned. He then told of a terrorist, a man who killed Christians because he thought he was serving God. This man had a vision of Jesus, and his life was changed: Saul of Tarsus, who became the Apostle Paul. "How big is your God? How big is your world? You live in the easiest time in history to learn about the world," he said.
Encouraging Chapel attendees to pray for those in other nations, Dr. Borthwick said to begin by praying for the nations represented on clothing. "Look at the tags to see where your clothing was made," he said. "If your vision is too small, you are only praying for your own community. God is bigger than your community. All over the world people are coming to know Jesus. The gospel is expanding and growing."
